Well, I think this debate was settled at the New York International Auto show in March. I, for one, am investing in the next wave of emissions-free vehicles :

The high speed train scenario will have to find a way to co-exist with 100mpg cars. And, the time it takes to
build that rail infrastructure may be simultaneous with
a move to highly fuel efficient popular priced cars. The need to maintain our expressways and highways is likely to encourage a recovery of motorist transportation. High speed rail will win if it becomes
a working environment, a shopping environment, a social environment, and saves door to door time. While many are now in pain
likely our next generation will have unprecedented choice of mobility from here to there...and in
this equation the possibility of fuel efficient aircraft should not be overlooked.

It might take some people a little longer than others to figure this out. For example, this guy:

HSR is seductive. It makes believers the way spiritual faiths make converts. Hard analysis however shows the realities behind this provocative idol. Adherents repeat the dogma of the Great Locomotive God as a life altering solution to all our problems, congestion, environmental deterioration, costs, peak oil, population increase, economic downturns, etc. Beware: anything that sounds too good to be true, is. We are, and will continue to be, a multi-modal transit society. But, what constitutes the right tool for the right job, deserves much more careful analysis.

Just discovered that Amtrak is private and "owned" by the Department of Transportation. No wonder they have never been profitable.
