"I think that the ever increasing focus on and investment in alternative energy sources, the constant innovation of technological invention and the threats to human survival now looming to which we must respond, will all cause us to narrowly escape the future Kunstler paints in his novel."

Based upon what evidence? Hope for a last-minute techno-miracle? Life's too short to be going through it stupid. Investment in alternative energy sources? Which ones? Solar PV, wind, tides, OTEC, geothermal, more hydro, nuclear fission, nuclear fusion? Care to be specific?

Do you read the commentary on Jim Kunstler's web site? I know the answer is NO. Why? Because, if you did, you'd know that there are no viable alternative energy solutions to fossil fuels. They are either dependent upon FF to survive and/or are unproven technologies like OTEC or nuclear fusion. They've all been presented and discussed on Jim's blog commentary.

Sorry if this comment seems harsh, but you seem like a nice person with some intelligence, who can write. So quit drinking the "hope" Kool-Aid and do some critical research on these topics on the web. Don't trust me--you don't know who I am. Start by checking out Jay Hanson's web sites, www.dieoff.org and www.warsocialism.com Don't be put off by their stark content and Jay's in-your-face approach. Read and learn.

I would love to hear a politician or industry group consider a US that could be less economically focussed on mobility.

I know this may sound simplistic, but if we remove the urgency on physical movement and the incredible harm all of our frenetic dealings seem to create maybe the picture doesn't have to be so bleak.

I think the energy crisis spells trouble for our nation, as well. We depend so very much on energy that it is really upsetting- corn ethanol is a very bad idea, and I am at loss at why people think that it is beneficial to our nation. All the facts point the other way!
