For example, global agricultural technology companies copyright seeds (slightly modified native varieties) and force third world farmers to buy them -- even taking them to court if the seeds accidentally blow into their fields. Then there are the pharmaceutical companies that block production of generic drugs thatg could save tens if not hundreds of people with AIDS and malaria. On the positive side is the fact that copyright in Europe lasts for fifty years, not renewable. So European record companies sre putting out fabulous multiple-CD box sets of classic jazz recordings at terrific bargain prices. Do I feel guilty about ordering them? Not at all -- the artists have long since died and in any case, when U.S. record companies reissue material on high-priced CDs they don't pay royalties to the musicians!
