David:

An interesting outcome of a hybrid that needs 6 hours for a charge is that the only people who will be able to take advantage of it live in houses, or at least some form of building where they have 24 hour control of all of their electric outlets.

I know that there have been statements that there is enough reserve power capacity at night for this. But I must wonder about it. Also, from where is the energy coming that will create the electricity?

Solar/Wind => Not Enough
Oil/Natural Gas/Ethanol => Global Warming
Nuclear Fission => Three Mile Island/Terrorism ?
Nuclear Fusion => 2040 or 2050

You say: "The EV1 battery technology of the 1990s did not provide enough power, durability and low cost to be practical for the larger auto market." But in fact the NiMH batteries used in the EV1 and the Toyota RAV4 EV (which I still drive) certainly provided enough power and durability for an electric car. Many electric RAVs with over 100,000 miles on the original battery are still on the road, and the durability of the EV1 version is unknown, as GM insisted on destroying the cars long before their batteries showed any sign of degradation. Regarding cost, we simply do not know how much mass production of NiMH would lower cost.
